New Infrared Discretes from Vishay Serve High-Speed, High Power Applications

Vishay Telefunken Devices Feature Miniaturized Surface-Mount Package

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - September 15, 2000 - Four new series of discrete infrared (IR) components, including both emitting and receiving devices, were announced today by Vishay Intertechnology. The new devices are the first from Vishay in a miniaturized surface-mount package with an integrated lens measuring just 2.5 mm by 2.0 mm with a 2.8 mm height profile. Applications for the new devices will range from steering wheel encoders and window controls in automobiles to IrDA-compatible data transmission in PDAs and notebook computers.

For photo interrupter, miniature light barrier, optical counter, and infrared sensor applications, Vishay is introducing the 950-nm TEMT10xx photo transistor and TSML10xx infrared emitter series. The TEMT100xx phototransistors feature high sensitivity, a 2-µs turn-on time, plus a daylight filter that reduces the effects of near-IR radiation. The TSML10xx emitters provides an extra-high radiant power of 35 mW and a typical radiant intensity of up to 300 mW per steradian - yet consume about the same power as standard-performance devices, with a typical forward voltage of just 1.35 V.

For IrDA-compliant data transmission, high-speed optical encoder systems, and fiber optic modules, Vishay is introducing two new 870-nm high-speed infrared series. New TEMD10xx photo PIN diodes provide fast 4-ns rise and fall times with high sensitivity enabled by a ±15° viewing angle and a 0.25 mm² radiant sensitive area. An integrated daylight filter reduces the effects of natural light. For high-speed infrared emitting, Vishay is introducing the new TSMF10xx. These new devices combine high-performance 30-ns rise and fall times with radiant power of 35 mW, yet like the TSML10xx series consume no more power than conventional devices, with forward voltage of just 1.4 V.

"These new devices provide designers with an excellent opportunity to upgrade the performance of systems using infrared components without putting any additional strain on the power budget," said Helmut Schultz,Senior Product Marketing Manager, Optical Sensors. "The very small package dimensions are an opportunity to save space in a wide variety of IR-enabled end products."

All four new device series are offered with four lead configuration options - gull wing, reverse gull wing, yoke, and axial - and supplied in tape and reel form for high-speed assembly. Samples are available now. Production quantities will be available in September 2000 with lead timesof 10 to 12 weeks for larger orders.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1,000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, rectifiers, transistors, and optoelectronics and selected ICs) and passive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, and transducers). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, and medical markets. Its product innovations, successful acquisition strategy, and ability to provide "one-stop shop" service have made Vishay a global industry leader.
