New Vishay Sprague Tantalum Chip Capacitors Combine Industry-Low ESR Ratings with Low-Profile, Surface-Mount Packaging

MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - July 25, 2001 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today released a new series of low-profile, solid tantalum chip capacitors that offer the industry's lowest equivalent series resistance (ESR) ratings among comparable devices, reducing power consumption and enabling thinner, more space-efficient end products.

The Vishay Sprague 591D-2mm series is designed for use in compact communications and computing systems, including consumer and high-end portable palmtops and notebook and desktop PCs. As the latest addition to Vishay's TANTAMOUNT® product line, the 591D-2mm is surface mountable and offers new case size options with 2-mm maximum heights.

Vishay's new capacitor series currently includes voltage ratings of 4 WVDC, 6.3 WVDC, and 10 WVDC, with ultra-low ESR ratings ranging from 0.045 Ω to 0.100 Ω, at 25°C and 100 kHz. Devices currently in development, to be added to the product line at a later date, feature voltage ratings of 16 WVDC, 20 WVDC, 25 WVDC, and 35 WVDC, and will provide ESR ratings as low as 0.060 Ω.

The tantalum 591D-2mm series provides a wide capacitance range-from 15 μF to 680 μF-with capacitance tolerance options of ±10% and ±20%. The 591D-2mm series also provides an extended operating temperature range of -55°C to +85°C, with 2/3 voltage derating to +125°C.

The 591D-2mm capacitors are supplied standard with lead-free terminations. Available in three case options, the devices range in size from 7.1 mm to 7.5 mm in length (0.281" to 0.293"), and 3.2 mm to 6.0 mm in width (0.126" to 0.235"). The 591D-2mm series provides footprint compatibility with EIA 535BAAC and CECC 30801 molded chips.

Samples and production quantities of the 591D-2mm capacitors are available now in tape and reel packaging, with lead times of eight weeks for larger orders.
