Vishay Offers Three New Single-Line ESD Protection Diodes in Ultra-Compact Plastic SOD923 Package for Space-Limited Applications

Devices Feature Low Maximum Leakage Current Down to <0.1 µA, Low Typical Capacitance Down to 12.5 pF, and Extremely Low 0.4-mm Profile

MALVERN, Pa. — November 9, 2007 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced the release of three new single-line ESD protection diodes in the tiny plastic SOD923 package for portable electronics and other space-sensitive applications.

The VESD03A1C-02Z, VESD05A1C-02Z, and VESD12A1C-02Z are designed to provide ESD protection in space-limited applications like portable electronics, including portable gaming devices, MP3-players, and cell phones.

With a compact 0.6-mm by 1.0-mm footprint and an extremely low profile of 0.4 mm, the devices can be placed very close to the interface connector or right in front of the ESD-sensitve IC-ports for optimized ESD protection.

The three new ESD-protection devices are made of silicon Z-diodes with reverse working ranges of 3.3 V, 5 V, and 12 V. Within these working ranges the diodes offer a high isolation to ground characterized by low leakage current (<1 µA) and low capacitances (<85 pF).

Any transient voltage signal exceeding the reverse breakthrough voltage level will be “clamped” or “short” to ground. Negative transient voltage signals drive the Z-diode in the forward direction so that the transient will also be “clamped” close below the ground level.

Due to the protection diodes’ short leads and small package size, their line inductance is very low, making them efficient ESD-protection devices.

Featuring a nonmagnetic package material, the devices provide transient protection for one data line as per IEC 61000 4 2 (ESD) at 30 kV (air and contact discharge). The devices are lead (Pb)-free and comply with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC.

Samples and production quantities of the new VESD03A1C-02Z, VESD05A1C-02Z, and VESD12A1C-02Z ESD single-line protection diodes in the compact SOD923 package are available now, with lead times of eight to 10 weeks for large orders.
