Billets cut to length often vary in density, which ultimately means that they vary in weight. Since rolling mills (billet end users) roll by weight, rather than length, overweight billets result in scrap, which must be returned and re-melted. Billets cut by weight may vary in length but they provide the perfect solution for rolling mill processing.

Application Requirement
An innovative system must control billet-cutting torches so that billets are cut to a predetermined weight rather than a predetermined length. System control equipment must be capable of sensing several caster variables that affect the density of the billets during a sequence of “heats”.
