Linear engine showing KIS Load Cell supports

Customer Concern
A wide range of tensions must be measured with high accuracy on fiber
optic cable deployed from an oceangoing vessel. In addition to wide
rangeability, the system must also accommodate a high dead weight to
tension force ratio. Although fiber optic cables carry many more channels
of information than their equivalent copper counterparts, they are much
more sensitive to excessive tension. Over stressing drastically affects
the cable's transmission characteristics.
Application Requirement
A precision cable handling system to measure varying tension on a ship
based cable-laying system. The system must provide accurate horizontal
force measurement without interference from vertical loads, while
compensating for vessel trim, roll and pitch.
Vishay Solution
The solution is applicable to Linear Engines (see picture), Drum Winches,
and Draw Off Hold Back Engines (DOHBs). High resolution AST load cell
instrumentation, combined with KIS Weigh Module accuracy, provides the
ideal solution to this problem. The KIS measurement axes are aligned
horizontally to measure the horizontal tension. High linear engine dead
weight is ignored by the unique KIS Beam design, which rejects side loads.
The System includes pitch compensation, which eliminates measurement
inaccuracy due to motion of vessel.
