DXp-40 systems with degrade mode operation

Application Requirement
The goal is reliable measurement of large coal silos in excess of 2.5 million pounds with a diagnostic-induced, fail-safe mode of operation.
Customer Concern
Due to the excessive size and weight of the silos, the system must have a redundant or fail-safe mode of operation. Essentially, if a load cell fails, system operation must continue while an engineering team develops and implements a replacement project strategy.
Vishay Solution
Vishay BLH designed silo measurement systems based upon high-capacity (300,000-pound to 750,000- pound) C2P2 Canister Load Cells and DXp-40 Weight Transmitters. Double-bridged C2P2 Load Cells offer inherent measurement redundancy and superior performance in harsh outdoor applications. The are recognized industry-wide for their excellent performance.
Although usually applied in quality-critical batch applications, DXp-40 Transmitter diagnostic surveillance and degrade mode provided the exact fail-safe operating conditions the customer required. Once a diagnostic test identifies one or more load cells in the system as providing faulty data, Vishay BLH’s DXp-40 provides a temporary degrade mode operation alternative. Degrade mode operation shuts off the actual measurement from the suspect cell(s) and uses a calculated digital substitute value, corrected for system balance and channel sensitivity. The resulting system performance will be reduced somewhat, but will still be compensated for load imbalance. Degrade mode allows continued system operation while engineers procure replacement parts and devise a remedial maintenance project.
