Application Requirement
Simple, easy to install transducers and instrumentation for new mill construction or retrofitting mills not originally equipped with a force measurement system. Measurements must encompass both work and drive post forces to ensure that mill stand balance is maintained.
Customer Concern
The system must be accurate, reasonably priced, and easy to install. Mill post overload protection must be provided. Minimal installation and maintenance downtime is imperative to ensure continuous productivity.
Vishay Solution
Vishay BLH and Vishay Nobel designed the RFS-3 Roll Force Measurement System based upon the Model E4 Semiconductor Extensometer. Extensometers simply bolt onto two studs that are welded to an existing mill post. No further retrofit procedures are required. Placing extensometers on both the work and drive side posts provides measurement for the complete mill stand. Stand balance is easily maintained by comparing readings from both posts.
RFS-3 electronics take the extensometer signals and calculate work/drive side sum and difference values. In addition, metal-in-the-mill detection provides setpoint driven overload protection. All system data can be transmitted to a host PLC via Modbus communication or to a PC using supplied, Windows based, “Deltacom” software.
