MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA -February 23, 2001 -A next-generation, self-contained smart position sensor that provides an analog electrical output over a full 360 range without requiring any external components was announced today by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH). The new Vishay Spectrol 601-1045 will be used in a wide range of end products and applications, including CCTVs, medical instruments, robotic arm control, CNC machinery, rotational control systems, pick and place systems, and angular feedback applications, where its low power consumption and non-volatile output make it a cost-effective alternative to encoders.

Designed to work with 4.5- to 5.5-V dc power supplies, the 601-1045 requires a supply current of just 20 mA, with analog voltage outputs specified for no less than 90% of supply. Its compact, self-contained package - with dimensions of just 44 mm by 33 mm by 20 mm deep - features a fully insulated molded plastic body with standard mounting bush and stainless steel shaft. For system connection, Vishay recommends a 4-wire (250 mm) Molex KK 4-way crimp connector cable assembly.

Providing resolution down to a minimum of 0.5, the 601-1045 features a continuous 360 electrical track with a maximum of 720 steps. Angular response time is a mere 50 μS. An electronic buffer with typical constant output impedance of less than 1 W provides improved immunity to loading and noise pickup in system installations.

Built for reliability, the 601-1045 will provide over 5,000,000 cycles with radial loads up to 200 gms. A continuous, unbroken polymer resistance track eliminates any physical discontinuities that might affect the wiper contact. On-board reverse polarity protection and IP54-compliant sealing ensure smooth operation even in the most rugged environments.

Unlike other comparable products, the 601-1045 can provide an output over a full 360 range with no dead band. The 601-1045 is thus a truly a 'universal' alternative for expensive encoders and sine/cosine systems.

The 601-1045 uses a potentiometric circuit with a continuous closed resistance track and three terminals placed equidistant around the element. The track is energized and the wiper output is processed by the decoder circuit to derive a single unambiguous position encoding voltage.

Samples and production quantities of the Vishay Spectrol 601-1045 are available now.
