Low-Profile, Low-Voltage Power Factor Correction Tubular Capacitors With Industry-Low Diameter Provide Compact Design, High Reliability, and Increased Heat Dissipation
MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - April 19, 2002 - Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced the release of a new series of 1-phase and 3-phase power factor correction (PFC) capacitors in tubular aluminum casings that provide the industry's smallest diameter and a very low height profile.
The ESTAprop® oil-impregnated capacitor and ESTAdry® dry dielectric capacitor rely on low-loss, self-healing metallized polypropylene film (MKP) technology to provide power factor correction in a wide range of low-voltage (<1000 V) electric utility and industrial applications, including motors and transformers.
Within the 400-V to 525-V range, the new Vishay ESTA PFC capacitors feature a height reduction of more than 20% - from 340 mm to 265 mm for the largest units with the maximum output per can - while maintaining their traditionally small diameters of 64 mm and 84 mm. As a result, the new capacitors fit perfectly into 300-mm cubicle modules with a multiple of 25-kvar step output, enabling more modules to be installed in a single cabinet.
The devices' small diameters and stacked assembly of the inner winding elements provide exceptional heat dissipation for reduction of internal temperature and increased life expectancy. In contrast to the behavior of concentric windings in some competing devices, the ESTAprop and ESTAdry capacitors feature winding elements that share the same heat transfer characteristics and solder connection space. In a delta connection up to 690 V, neighboring winding elements also share the same voltage level, reducing the risk of device breakdown between phases.
Vishay devices provide the highest possible outputs in kvar per voltage rating. Devices in the ESTAprop and ESTAdry series are available in standard rated voltages of 230 V, 400 V, 440 V (415 V), 525 V (480 V), and 660 V (690 V), with rated outputs up to 30 kvar at 50 c/s, depending on the voltage rating. Additional kvar values are available in voltage ratings ranging from 230 V to 1000 V.
Designed in accordance with IEC 60831-1+2, EN 60831-1+2, and VDE 0560-46+47, the ESTAprop and ESTAdry feature overvoltage values ranging from Ucn + 10% (up to 8 hours daily) to Ucn + 30% (up to 1 minute) and high overcurrent values of at least 1.3 In up to 3 In and higher, particularly for the lowest available output-per-voltage rating in the 84-mm design with a 190-mm height.
The standard ESTAprop capacitor is impregnated with biodegradable, natural oil - with a fire point greater than 300°C - under vacuum and hermetically sealed in a construction that ensures excellent heat dissipation and constant capacitance over an extended period of time. ESTAdry capacitors provide the design flexibility to meet the standards of countries that accept only a dry PFC capacitor.
Each capacitor is housed in a deep-drawn aluminum container with a metal lid press-rolled onto it. A threaded stud (M12) at the bottom of the container serves for both grounding and mounting. Current is supplied via screw-on (M5) terminal in the 84-mm-diameter capacitor, or double push-on (6.3*0.8 mm) terminal in the 64-mm capacitor.
The screw-on terminal design of the 84-mm capacitor may be used for individual connection by single cables up to 25-mm2 cross-section, as opposed to the 16-mm2 limitation in other brands. ESTA standard capacitors with an 84-mm diameter are designed with a "Thickfilm" discharge resistor unit, forked terminals for easy mounting, and in-line connection of the capacitors to the supply. Both capacitor types are in accordance with protection class IP00, and plastic covers are available to provide a higher degree of protection.
