New Vishay Power Metal Strip® Resistors Offer Power Ratings of up to 2 W in Small Package Sizes
Resistors in 0805, 1206, 2010, and 2512 Package Sizes Feature Double the Power Capacity of Standard WSL-Type Resistor Series
MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA - August 9, 2002 - The industry's first Power Metal Strip® resistor with a high power rating in the 0805, 1206, 2010, and 2512 package sizes has been announced by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH).
With double the power capacity of standard WSL-type resistor series, the latest addition to the Vishay WSL series is a small, surface-mount resistor intended for high-power current-sensing applications in dc-to-dc converters, power management systems, and VRMs in computer and telecommunications systems. In automotive systems, the resistor will be used for electronic controls including audio electronics, engine and climate controls, and anti-lock brakes.
Specially selected and stabilized materials permit power ratings of up to 2 W in the WSLxxxx-18 resistor. With its offering of small case sizes, the new resistor offers a high power-to-package-size ratio while maintaining the superior electrical characteristics of the Power Metal Strip construction. Smaller resistors - such as the WSLxxxx-18 - that feature the same high power ratings of larger devices enable OEMs to use smaller PCBs, which in turn increases manufacturing speed and reduces raw material costs. This new component also allows designers of electronic systems to meet market demands for more compact, higher-performing end products.
Vishay's proprietary processing technique produces extremely low resistance values in the WSL series. The WSL0805-18, WSL1206-18, WSL2010-18, and WSL2512-18 are available with resistance value ranges of 10 mΩ to 200 mΩ, 2 mΩ to 200 mΩ, 1 mΩ to 500 mΩ, and 1 mΩ to 10 mΩ, respectively, with a standard tolerance of ±1.0%. A standard tolerance of ±0.5% is available in reduced resistance ranges.

The new resistor features excellent frequency response, low thermal EMF, and very low inductance ranging from 0.5 nH to 5 nH. The temperature coefficient ranges from ±75 ppm/°C to ±275 ppm/°C, depending on package size and resistance value. Rated for operation over a temperature range of -65°C to +170°C, the device provides resistance to extreme temperatures, as well as to thermal and mechanical shock, moisture, and vibration. Each resistor's all-welded construction features solderable terminations and a resistive element of either solid metal nickel-chrome or a manganese-copper alloy.
Provided in 8-mm (WSL0805-18, WSL1206-18) and 12-mm (WSL2010-18, WSL2512-18) tape-and-reel form, samples and production quantities of the WSLxxxx-18 resistor are available now, with a lead time of four to six weeks for larger orders.
