Glass coated SMD thermistors with nickel barrier termination
December 11, 2002 — Delivering high sensitivity and high accuracy over a wide temperature range, the latest thermistors from BCcomponents (BCc) are fully covered with glass for environmental protection and feature nickel barrier contacts for improved soldering characteristics.
BCc’s surface mount series 2322 615 3x and 2322 615 5x negative temperature coefficient (NTC) chip thermistors are ideal for temperature compensation, sensing, and protection circuits in applications such as battery chargers, switch mode power supplies and automotive systems. The devices will also suit designs for temperature regulation of optoelectronic components including laser diodes and CCDs.
Available in 0603 and 0805 surface mount packages, the 2322 615 3x (0603) and 2322 615 5x (0805) NTC thermistors feature R25 values (resistance at 25 °C) from 2.2kΩ to 100kΩ. Standard R25 tolerance options are ±2%, ±3%, ±5% and ±10% and a ±1 option is available on request. Calibration constant tolerance from 25 °C to 85 °C (ß25/85) is just ±1%, ensuring high sensitivity and high accuracy across a wide temperature range.
Available in paper tape-and-reel format, the 2322 615 3x and 2322 615 5x thermistors are fully compatible with high-volume, automated manufacturing processes including wave soldering and reflow soldering in accordance with CECC00802. A tin plated nickel termination provides better wettability and improved reliability against leaching compared with conventional silver/palladium solutions. In addition, problems associated with silver migration are eliminated. Operating temperature for the devices is specified as −40 °C to 150 °C, while maximum power dissipation at 25 °C is 125 mW.
