Vishay Introduces 0.5-A, 1.0-A, and 1.5-A Flip Chip Schottky Diodes in Industry-First FlipKY® Chip Scale Package
FCSP Devices Offer Industry’s Smallest Footprints of 0.9 mm by 1.2 mm and 1.5 mm by 1.5 mm With an Ultra-Low 0.6-mm Profile
MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA. — November 15, 2007 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) is now offering industry-first FlipKY® chip scale Schottky diodes that are the smallest such devices on the market. The Vishay FCSP FlipKY series announced today includes 0.5-A, 1.0-A, and 1.5-A devices with footprint dimensions of 0.9 mm by 1.2 mm and 1.5 mm by 1.5 mm.
With low profiles of 0.6 mm for the 1-A device and 0.5 mm for the 0.5-A device, Vishay FlipKY chip scale Schottky diodes are designed to save space in cell phones, Bluetooth accessories, PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, personal video players, and other portable electronic systems where low-profile devices are required. Typical applications include battery protection, freewheeling diode, boost diode, and current steering.
The FlipKY wafer-level, chip scale format offers the anode and cathode on the same side of the die. The anode and cathode connections are made through solder bump pads on one side of the silicon, enabling designers to strategically place the diodes on the PCB. This design not only minimizes board space but also reduces thermal resistance and inductance, allowing the virtual elimination of all package parasitic for improved overall circuit efficiency.
Vishay FlipKY devices feature compact footprints of 0.9 mm by 1.2 mm for the 0.5-A diodes, and 1.5 mm by 1.5 mm for the 1.0-A and 1.5-A diodes, which represents one-tenth and one-fifth the size of the SMA footprint respectively. Their advanced physical design allows FlipKY products to offer extremely low thermal resistance within these tiny footprints, compared to devices in standard packages with the same electrical specifications.
The FlipKY series additionally offers an ultra-low forward voltage per footprint area and an improved working temperature, with full operation at 150 °C.
Devices in Vishay’s FlipKY series offer a range of electrical characteristics that allow designers to choose either low forward voltage to optimize conduction losses or low reverse leakage to optimize reverse power losses. The devices offer low maximum forward voltages from 0.33 V to 0.47 V, and a maximum reverse voltage of 30 V and 40 V. Devices offering exceptionally low leakage are designated by an “H” in the part number.

The FlipKY chip scale package is supplied in tape and reel format and can be mounted using standard SMD techniques. The standard FlipKY construction is fully lead (Pb)-free and halogen-free. Eutectic solder bumps are available on request.
Samples and production quantities of the new FlipKY diodes are available now, with lead times of eight to 10 weeks for larger orders.
