MALVERN, PENNSYLVANIA — Nov. 13, 2008 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced that it will demonstrate at electronica 2008 (Stand A5.143) an industry-first reference design for a 200-W 1/16th brick offering the highest power density and lowest component count of any such 1/16th brick dc-to-dc power supply implementation on the market.

The new reference design delivers power density of > 600 W per square inch, more than 60 % higher than any previous 1/16th brick design. Offering a nominal 12-V dc output, the design operates with 95 % efficiency and 40 % lower power losses at 270 kHz. Its fixed duty-cycle mode provides a constant input-output voltage relationship to maximize efficiency. An ENABLE pin is provided to allow the module to be turned on and off for use in power supply sequencing applications.

Designed to speed time to market, for OEM modules or imbedded DC-DC, while greatly reducing space requirements, 90 % of the components in the new reference design are available from Vishay, including the controller IC, power MOSFETs, rectifier, and passive components.

The heart of the new reference design is the SiP11206 controller IC, which integrates high-voltage (75-V) half-bridge MOSFET drivers with a 1.6-A current drive, as well as a full range of current monitoring and control features. The SiP11206 minimizes component count compared to other IBC implementations by eliminating the need for separate controller and high-voltage MOSFET driver components. Its half-bridge architecture further enables the use of smaller and less expensive lower-voltage components.

Vishay’s 1/16th “low profile” brick reference design allows power module manufacturers and telecom OEMs quickly to up take a proven design and put it into production, whether as a dedicated module or as part of a power supply system. Typically the 1/16th bricks built using the design will range in output from 60 W to 200 W, but the same SiP11206 controller IC is also eminently suited for 400-W to 600-W full-bridge power supplies, thanks to its versatile architecture.

The SiP11206 controller IC steps down voltages with > 95 % efficiency. It features an input voltage range of 36 V to 75 V and can comfortably handle 100-V transients for 100 ms in compliance with ETSI 300-132-2. Self-driven synchronous rectification eliminates the necessity for secondary-side MOSFET drivers and isolated pulse drivers, reducing costs and simplifying designs.

The SiP11206 also offers a comprehensive range of protection features. Advanced current monitoring and control circuitry allows the user to set the maximum current in the primary circuit. This feature protects against overcurrent conditions, output short circuits, and errors when paralleling power supplies. Additional features include low input voltage detection, programmable soft-start, and overtemperature protection.

In addition to the SiP11206, the 1/16th brick reference design features Vishay Siliconix power MOSFETs in the thermally adanced PowerPAK® 1212-8 package and a low-profile IHLP® Vishay Dale inductor, among the components available from Vishay.

Vishay’s 1/16th brick reference design comes with full documentation, including schematics and PC board layouts. Further information is available at www.vishay.com/ppg?69232. For designs requiring a semi-regulated output, Vishay offers a 1/8th brick reference design using its SiP11205 IBC controller IC. Further information is available at www.vishay.com/doc?69233.
