An aerospace customer required a planar transformer for a high power military avionics application, but did not have the full design specifications finalized. However, it was known that overall board space would be limited, and that the transformer’s height profile would also be a concern.
Due to its high power and modification options, the customer provisionally selected the patented MTPL customizable standard series of transformers on Vishay’s website, and then reached out for optimization advice and assistance.
Multiple package size options are available in the MTPL family, and each of these can be further modified (for example, turns ratio / output voltage, inductance value, and tolerance) to optimize the performance and power rating available in a specific footprint and height profile. Utilizing direct engineer to engineer communications, the customer was able to achieve their important electrical parameters while minimizing the device size and weight.
Furthermore, mechanical optimization was critical for this avionics application. To meet the harsh shock and vibration requirements of the design, through-hole terminations were selected instead of surface-mount terminations. Vishay was also able to assist in reducing the system test and approval process timeline by providing multiple iterations of quick-turn samples in a very short period of time.

Due to the modification options of the MTPL solution, Vishay was able to provide a higher power, more efficient solution in a low profile (11 mm max.) package that required no up-front charges for prototype samples. The robust, over-molded, through-hole solution was designed and delivered inside of the customer’s timeline.
