This circuit can provide backup power for a 3.3 V system. It does this using a set of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) as the energy storage element. The MAX38890 2.5 V to 5.5 V, Reversible Buck/Boost Regulator for Backup Applications charges and discharges the EDLCs with up to 2.5 A (set using a timer). Energy moves from the bus to the capacitor during normal operation (bus > 3.08 V) and is used to keep the bus at 3 V during power supply dropouts.
The PCB can be used on a breadboard and gives access to all of the IC's communication pins. It also has options to increase the energy storage capacity by adding more EDLCs.
